Corneal Diseases Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)

Lazy eye syndrome is the condition when the visual capacity of one eye is lower than the other eye’s or both eyes compared to the normal limits, although there is no structural defect in the eye or optic nerve. Vision is a sense learned from birth. As our brain develops, our vision also improves and we learn to see in more detail. If there is a situation that prevents us from seeing during this period, for example, if one eye has a higher dioptre than the other, the vision is learned more blurry on that side and that eye remains lazy.

What are the causes of lazy eye syndrome?

If lazy eye syndrome is not treated, it can lead to a rapid decrease in visual acuity, loss of vision in both eyes, and difficulties in perceiving depth. It is very difficult for the person to realize it by himself, as the syndrome occurs in the developmental period. Strabismus is the most common cause of lazy eye syndrome.

Refractive error: The fact that refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism are higher in one eye than the other can cause lazy eye syndrome.

Strabismus: Strabismus with a squint in one eye is the loss of parallelism of both eyes with each other. There are 6 extraocular muscles in each eye. Lack or excess of strength in one or more of these causes strabismus. While one eye is looking straight, the other may look inward, outward, up or, down. In some cases, squint is present in both eyes. Depending on the cause of the strabismus, it may occur continuously or temporarily. There is no single cause of strabismus. It may occur for different reasons. Early diagnosis is very important in the treatment of strabismus.

Other eye diseases:

  • Staining on the cornea
  • A droopy eyelid that closes the pupil
  • Cataract

A cataract is an eye disease that can be seen from birth and accelerates the formation of a lazy eye. When the cataract is congenital, it can lead to lazy eye syndrome very early. This condition should be treated as soon as possible.
